Sparks Museum Volunteer Richard Dreiling Honored at Nevada Volunteers Ceremony

On Thursday, October 15th, 2022, the Governor’s Points of Light Awards recognizing exemplary individuals and organizations for their volunteerism announced their 2022 winners at the Blind Center of Nevada in Las Vegas. There, the Sparks Museum’s former board President and current board Secretary Richard Dreiling was honored with the Governor’s Points of Light Silver Award in the category of “Lifetime Achievement.” The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes any individual who has demonstrated extraordinary achievement in volunteerism and service in Nevada for a period of 20 or more years.

Richard has volunteered at the Sparks Heritage Museum since 1999, serving as a tour guide, front desk volunteer, greeter, president, and the primary author of the Museum’s quarterly publication “The Headlight.” He has donated thousands of dollars in in-kind gifts and volunteered more than 10,000 hours at the museum. He exemplifies the mission of the Sparks and Heritage museum which is to collect and preserve the history and culture of the city of Sparks. Thousands of people have taken part in tours, lectures, or read his articles, and many young adults who return to the Museum state lectures or read his articles and many young adults who return to the Museum stating that they remembered their tours with him as young school children. His greatest wish is that people don’t forget the rich history of Sparks, and he was worked tirelessly toward his goal. Along with his work at the Museum, he does other educational events such as one at Bowers Mansion explaining the history of Nevada to the visiting public. The activities that he participates in far surpass the average volunteer. He operate with the viewpoint that nothing is insurmountable, and we all have a role to play, thereby fostering a strong sense of teamwork at the museum. Richard is the heart of the Sparks Heritage Museum, and he has left an indelible mark on the community by way of his efforts.
