Paul Villa presents “Bruce Van Voorhis and the Navy in Nevada” on Saturday, September 2 at 2 p.m. This presentation is part of the First Saturday lecture series, where the Sparks Museum presents free programming 2 p.m. on the first Saturday of every month.
The presentation will discuss Nevada’s only Medal of Honor recipient, Bruce Van Voorhis of Fallon. Fallon Naval Air Station is named in honor of Voorhis, and Villa will explain how he came to be awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously in WWII, and why the Navy still matters to Nevada.
Paul Villa retired from the Reno Police Department, where he spent over half of his career in investigations. He was also trained as a forensic artist. Professor Villa obtained his BA in Social Science Studies from UNLV and his Master’s Degree in American History from the American Military University. Paul Villa is currently a professor at Truckee Meadows Community College. A native of the California Bay area, he has maintained a lifelong love affair with ships and naval history.
